In 1999, the New York Mets recruited Major League Baseball player Jose Reyes after observers saw him play at a trial camp. In June 2003, he debuted with the main league club. Reyes was a four-time All-Star with the Mets, having been selected in 2006, 2007, 2010, and 2011.

He won the National League baserunner title three consecutive years, 2005–2007. Reyes was also the National League hitting champion in 2011 and received the Silver Slugger Award in 2006. There has never been a player in New York Mets history with more triples or more stolen bases. After renewing his contract with the Mets in 2006, he earned $23.25 million.
