The Breakers is the imperial gem of Newport, Rhode Island, which was a prominent slave trade port throughout the 1700s. In the early 1800s, Newport was a popular summer vacation spot for the wealthy landowners of the South. Later on, it became a magnet for the top industrialists of the Gilded Age. Cornelius Vanderbilt II, the grandson of the man who established the New York Central Railroad, was the most prominent of these individuals.
In 1885, Vanderbilt purchased the first version of the Breakers, which was constructed of wood. A few years later, it was destroyed in a fire, and he recruited designer Richard Morris Hunt to construct the new estate.
