Whitehall, Henry Flagler’s Palm Beach estate, was hailed as “more spectacular than any mansion in Europe, larger and more majestic compared to any other personal abode in the world,” as per an article in the New York Herald in 1902. For his wedding to Mary Lily Kenan Flagler, Flagler constructed Whitehall, a Gilded Age palace with 75 rooms and 100,000 square feet.

Until Flagler died in 1913, the house was utilized by the couple as a winter getaway for the Gilded Age elite. Flagler used the same team of architects, John Carrere and Thomas Hastings, who created his Hotel Ponce de Leon in St. Augustine, to create Whitehall.
