Joey Votto attended Richview Collegiate Institute and excelled in ice hockey and basketball in addition to baseball. He was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the second stage of the 2002 Major League Baseball rookie selection as a first baseman.
Votto participated with the Class A Dayton Dragons in 2004, after spending two seasons with the minor league affiliates. He was also a member of the World Team in the Futures Game in 2006. In 2007, he received a promotion to the major league level with the Cincinnati Reds. From 2010 to 2013, Votto was included in the All-Star Game on four separate occasions.
