The residence of industrialist Andrew Carnegie serves as the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in 2022. The Carnegies’ spectacular, 64-room house, constructed between 1899 and 1902, is a reflection of their wish to provide a big, pleasant, and bright environment in which to educate their daughter, Margaret. The home was built by the company of Babb, Cook & Willard.

In 1898, when Carnegie acquired the lot for the home, he did it on purpose, opting for a location far to the north where his contemporaries were settling. Because of the area’s openness, he was able to create a sizable lawn, one of the few privately enclosed green spots in Manhattan.
