Mildred and Robert Woods Bliss, art enthusiasts and humanities supporters, founded Dumbarton Oaks. The Blisses resided in South America and Europe, while Robert Bliss served as a representative for the United States. Longing for a settled life in the nation’s capital, they finally settled on the Federal-style mansion built in 1801 in June of 1920. They were lifelong patrons of the arts and avid collectors of literature and artwork.
The Blisses made several major renovations to the home when they bought it. Together with famous landscape architect Beatrix Farrand, Mildred Barnes Bliss reworked the area around the home into tiered lawns and views.
