You may be surprised to discover that acting was never Cuba Gooding Jr.’s first choice. First, he worked as a break-dancer, performing with Lionel Richie at the closing ceremonies of the 1984 Summer Olympics. Next, he studied Japanese martial arts for a few years before finally turning toward acting.

Gooding Jr.’s first television appearance was as a guest star on “Hill Street Blues” in 1987. Followed by similar appearances on “Amen” and “MacGyver.” Luckily, he landed his first significant role in the crime drama “Boyz n the Hood.” And that single performance turned the tides, opening the door to roles in several other major films.
