The house was finished in 1895 for Maggie Vanderbilt, the widow of the scoundrel Elliott Fitch Shepherd. The Sleepy Hollow Country Club has called Woodlea, a 140-room estate on the Hudson River, home since 1911. At the time, Woodlea ranked as the 15th biggest private property in the United States.
Maggie’s spouse used all of the Vanderbilts’ cash stash to create a gigantic palace for himself, and the scale of the house reflected his inflated ego. Kimberley Hall in England, the birthplace of P.G. Wodehouse, the man credited with creating the world’s most renowned fictional butler, Jeeves, was the inspiration for Woodlea.
