Idle Hour – 70,000 sq ft

The 900-acre Idle Hour estate formerly belonged to railroad tycoon and businessman William Kissam Vanderbilt I and is located in the western part of Oakdale near the Connetquot River. Several of the property’s most impressive structures were created by well-known American architectural companies specifically for him. Vanderbilt and other members of the Southside Sportsmen’s Club built extravagant country residences on the Great South Bay because of its proximity to New York City.

These mansions provide a historical connection between the economic and industrial boom of late 19th-century America. Even though the estate was split up after Vanderbilt’s death in 1920, the structures survived.
