Perhaps a 1,829,865 sq ft seems too much for the house, but that’s the size of a whole property where Elstowe Manor is situated. In 1898, the site of William L. Elkins’s vacation house, “Needles,” was razed to make way for the construction of this mansion. Elkins, a Philadelphia industrialist, also played a crucial role in establishing the Pennsylvania Railroad Corporation, the predecessor of SEPTA.
The intricately carved wooden and plated framing, marble columns, and highlights were all hand-made in Europe and sent to the United States for final assembly. Some rooms have a French vibe since they were created by famous French interior décor specialists Allard et Fils.
