The White House is probably the most famous building on our whole list since it’s where the president of the United States lives and works. The mansion was designed by Irish-born engineer James Hoban. Whitewashed Aquia Creek sandstone was used in construction, which took place between the years 1792 and 1800.

As soon as Thomas Jefferson moved there in 1801, he had architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe build short courtyards on either wing to hide stables and stores. The estate was built in the Neoclassical style, which draws heavily on the work of Roman engineer Vitruvius and Italian architect Andrea Palladio.
