American actress and singer Mary Martin was honored to originate many leading roles on stage over seven decades of her career. Countless fans still remember her for playing Nellie Forbush in “South Pacific,” Maria von Trapp in “The Sound of Music,” and the title character in “Peter Pan.” She gave yet another gem to the industry; her son Larry Hagman, a famous director.
Martin’s radio career began in 1939 as the vocalist on the revival of CBS’s “The Tuesday Night Party.” In 1940, she was on NBC’s “Good News of 1940.” She parted with us on November 3, 1990, five years after her retirement.
